Lancang–Mekong Cooperation (LMC) has become a leading example of regional cooperation and a successful model for building a community with a shared future for humanity. The year 2026 marks the tenth anniversary of the first LMC Leaders’ Meeting and the formal launch of LMC. Over the past decade, the six Lancang–Mekong countries have upheld the spirit of putting development first, consulting on an equal footing, pursuing practical and efficient cooperation, and embracing openness and inclusiveness. Political mutual trust has deepened, cooperation has delivered substantial results, and progress has been made toward a Lancang–Mekong community with a shared future, offering valuable lessons for solidarity and cooperation across the Global South. Amid profound changes in the international landscape and the rapid advance of digital and AI technologies, deeper regional cooperation calls for both a strong foundation in area studies and effective international communication. Advancing area studies and innovation in international communication in the digital and AI era, while promoting exchanges and mutual learning among the region’s civilizations, is an important academic contribution to building a Lancang–Mekong community with a shared future and a community with a shared future for humanity.
To bring together scholars and practitioners from China and abroad, the Communication Research Committee of the Huaxia Culture Promotion Association, the Research Base for Communication with Neighboring Countries of the China Federation of Radio and Television Associations, and Honghe University plan to jointly convene the 2026 Lancang–Mekong Symposium on Area Studies and International Communication in Mengzi, Yunnan, on November 27–29, 2026. The symposium will be held under the guidance of the Alliance of Chinese Universities for Talent Cultivation and Discipline Development in Area Studies, with support from the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences. Under the theme “Building a Lancang–Mekong Community with a Shared Future: Innovation in Area Studies and International Communication in the Digital and AI Era”, it will examine ten years of LMC and the development of a community with a shared future, exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations and people-to-people cooperation, international communication innovation and capacity building in the digital and AI era, and the China–Vietnam community with a shared future and Yunnan–Guangxi cooperation with Vietnam.
